The area, at one time called Cadzow, was the ancient hunting ground of Rhyderrach, King of Strathclyde. The name of Cadzow was used until the middle of the fifteenth century when the present day name of Hamilton was 'adopted'. The town became a Burgh in 1475 and received its first Member of Parliament in 1832. With an early history of battles, castles, martyrs and the Dukes of Hamilton, the town has also been one of the centres of the Scottish coal industry in more modern times. Older readers may well remember some of the scenes shown here.
